The Storied Straw Hat

Requiring a minimum of eight hours each to weave, our straw hats are made in Ecuador from natural Toquilla straw found in the foothills of the Andes. This unique textile is native to Ecuador and is the defining factor of a true Panama Hat. Today, most straw hats are constructed by machine from artificial materials in Asia. Traditional Toquilla straw hats are woven in the homes of local Ecuadorian women in communities where the skill is passed down from generation to generation. A difficult mastery, the art of weaving these pieces was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists in 2012.
