The Storied Straw Hat

Our enduring straw hats have an authenticity that’s nothing short of nonfiction.
It’s an infrequent occasion that you add a piece to your collection that’s crafted entirely by hand—from beginning to end. These finds are rich with the history and artisanship of a culture, offering a higher quality than the mass-produced mainstreams. The very first essential in our collection, the tale of the Ecuadorian Panama hat is a story that’s close to the origins of our brand and the roots of our Co-Founder.
The Heritage

Requiring a minimum of eight hours each to weave, our straw hats are made in Ecuador from natural Toquilla straw found in the foothills of the Andes. This unique textile is native to Ecuador and is the defining factor of a true Panama Hat. Today, most straw hats are constructed by machine from artificial materials in Asia. Traditional Toquilla straw hats are woven in the homes of local Ecuadorian women in communities where the skill is passed down from generation to generation. A difficult mastery, the art of weaving these pieces was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists in 2012.

Signature Touches

Signature Touches

The hats are collected from homes for the final stages of craftsmanship, all completed locally. Traditional Panama hats are bleached to their distinctive white appearance, while our wide-brim summer hat is kept natural for a decidedly pure approach. Once the hats have attained their desired color, they are left to dry in the field before going through an extensive ironing process to achieve their signature silhouettes. Finally, the last touches, like ribbons on the inside and outside of the bond, are applied for comfort and aesthetic.
