Spring Inspiration: Luis Barragán

Minimal, bold and modern — the architecture of Luis Barragán inspires the fresh perspective of our Spring 2016 Collection.
Rife with a vibrant expression of colors, textures and lines, the striking work of Mexican architect Luis Barragán sets the scene for our Spring 2016 Collection. A self-proclaimed "emotional architect", Barragán's buildings are a reflection of his country's rich culture interpreted in a modern, minimal way. He believed that "any work of architecture which does not express serenity is a mistake."
Barragán's intentional approach to design manifests in a way that every angle, every shadow and every color mingles effortlessly to enhance the effect of its surroundings. His purposeful perspective inspires the gorgeous mix of textures and tones revealed in our Spring Collection, expressing Barragán's influence in a way that feels authentic to Cuyana's soft, feminine attitude.

Design features like the layering effect of our poplin dress, the accentuated pleat at the back of our classic shirt and the sharp back vent of our cropped trench lend the collection architectural edge.
Barragán was drawn to a juxtaposition of confident color and raw materials, such as stone, wood and water. These elements are realized in our collection as more delicate shades of blush, mint and cornflower, balanced by earthy neutrals like stone, clay and nude. Refined textures like exquisitely woven cottons, crisp poplins and heavyweight silks deliver a distinctively natural feel. Mixed-media materials are also prevalent with a dynamic play on smooth and pebbled leathers, and the introduction of sumptuous suede throughout.
The season also reflected Barragán's play with proportions, highlighting pronounced silhouettes and unexpected details. These pieces combine the art of timeless essentials with an au courant sensibility and statement look and feel.
